Mojave 3 - Excuses For Travellers

This 2026 Remaster of Mojave 3's Excuses for Travellers, originally released on 4AD, marks a significant point in the band's evolving sound. Recorded at Fortress studios with electronic artist Mark Van Hoen, the album blends the introspective intimacy of their earlier work with a more cohesive and refined approach. Neil, reflecting on the album's creation, noted a departure from direct influences like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, stating the band had "absorbed" them more, allowing their own unique sound to emerge, a process significantly aided by Van Hoen's production.

Excuses for Travellers is characterized by its lusciously textured arrangements, featuring restrained guitar, drums, pedal steel, horns, and piano. It creates an introspective atmosphere, placing Neil's voice and songwriting at the forefront. The album also highlights contributions from other band members, featuring the only tracks solely credited to Rachel (“Bringin’ Me Home”) and Ian (“Got My Sunshine”). Neil emphasized the importance of lyrical clarity in Mojave 3, contrasting it with his experience in Slowdive, where lyrics were less prominent.
