Peter Hammill - Fool's Mate [180g Vinyl]

Fool’s Mate is Peter Hammill’s 1971 debut solo album, reissued on 180g vinyl for listeners exploring his work beyond Van der Graaf Generator. This edition replicates the original UK pressing in a gatefold sleeve and includes an album-artwork print backed with new liner notes by Hammill.

Written between 1967 and 1971, the songs are shorter and more melodic than Van der Graaf Generator’s increasingly complex progressive rock, drawing on late-1960s psychedelic and folk-influenced pop. Produced by John Anthony at Trident Studios in London, the album features contributions from Van der Graaf Generator musicians, Robert Fripp and members of Lindisfarne.

Acoustic guitar, piano, organ, saxophone and electric guitar shape the album’s sound. “Vision”, “The Birds”, “Candle” and “Imperial Zeppelin” highlight Hammill’s developing lyrical style and melodic songwriting, while the album marks an important beginning to his solo catalogue.
